English as an Additional Language
English as an Additional Language
At Whittle we are very proud of the multicultural diversity of our school community. We actively promote children to learn “home” languages and enjoy the gift of becoming bilingual speakers. With this in mind we are aware that children who are exposed to multiple languages may find the demands of the English curriculum challenging.
Mrs Ketley is our teaching assistant with a responsibility for supporting children with English as an additional language. She works with the SENCo to identify children who might need additional support. Support is administered in a variety of ways. A lot of her time is spent with the younger children as early intervention has had a positive impact on later learning. Support is flexible depending on needs. It could be within the classroom to help access lessons with the rest of the class.
